King also fought against legal segregation and was an official Nobel Peace Prize laureate. On this day, the public are encouraged to consider his legacy as well as the principles he stood for, including peaceful coexistence and equality between races.

Therefore, Southerners were uneasy about this practice, and some even objected to the idea of using the day to host partisan rallies and parades.
